Abstract
Chapter 5 described one type of ontogenetic ultimate cause of behavior—classical conditioning. This chapter introduces another ontogenetic ultimate cause—operant conditioning—and the variables that affect it. These variables influence behavior in a wide range of species, especially human beings. We humans are, however, also affected by language, which is a special kind of operant behavior. Chapter 8 examines the role of language in human behavior.
