Part of the book series: Physics of Atoms and Molecules ((PAMO))

An atomic spectral line is characteristic of the element producing the spectrum. However, the energy of a spectral line does depend slightly on the isotope. Energy differences between isotopes are called isotope shifts. They occur in both atomic and molecular spectra but this book is concerned only with the former.
