General Considerations

  • Chapter
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Abstract

The treatment of PTSD patients is difficult for a variety of reasons. Not only is the nature of the trauma problematic for the patient, it is also threatening to the therapist (Haley, 1978). As with much of the literature on PTSD, a disproportionate amount of attention has been given to the treatment of Vietnam combat veterans. Nevertheless, many of the difficulties faced by therapists treating veterans with PTSD are also faced by therapists treating victims of other traumas.
