Abstract

Normal carpal mechanics relies on the complex interplay between a sophisticated arrangement of carpal ligaments and carpal bone morphology.25,32 A number of biomechanical studies have been performed to define the kinematics of the normal wrist and the changes in kinematics seen in degenerative states. Early workers studied x-ray films and cadaver specimens to observe relative motions in the wrist.15,19,25 Investigators had also used quantified, three-dimensional techniques, such as sonic digitizers,2,5 instrumented electromechanical linkages,50 radiostereophotogrammetric techniques,10 or three-dimensional computer imaging,4 to define precise intercarpal motions.
