Abstract

This opening chapter describes the market for metal packaging in terms of the number and types of products used and the quantities of materials used in their manufacture. It also includes sections on the metals commonly used in the manufacture of the various products, including their corrosion characteristics, and on the basic manufacturing processes used to convert these materials into products. The intention is to provide the reader with an understanding of the various processes that protective and decorative systems need to withstand to deliver a functional, and in many cases a decorated, package to the filler and ultimately to the consumer.
