Abstract
In 1994, the parents of a fifteen-year-old were ordered by a California court to have their daughter undergo chemotherapy treatment for ovarian cancer. The director of the County Social Services Department stated that they asked for the court order “because clearly there was a medical neglect issue. If there is a medicine that will cure a child, and the parents do not want to use that medical treatment or medicine, then its viewed a medical neglect case.”1
