Abstract

In this chapter, I share some thoughts about the preparation and submission of an application for research funding. My comments are based on a variety of experiences relating to “grantsmanship,” the strategies and perspectives associated with experienced (and successful) applicants for funding. Over the past decade, I have served as a Visiting Scientist to the National Institute of Mental Health, an Acting Associate Administrator and policy and program consultant to many parts of the Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Mental Health Administration (ADAMHA); an ad hoc reviewer and member of a peer review panel; and an applicant for training, research, and program development funds. Through these experiences, I have achieved some understanding of the process underlying the formation of funding policies and the attitudes, perspectives, and strategies of successful applicants.
