Abstract
Research into genetic determinants of the development of morphological traits consists in the observation of characteristics shared by parents and children or by siblings. Records of correlation in stature between relatives have shown that this correlation is higher than the correlation of any other quantitatively inherited characteristic (Ferusho,1968). However, the results of investigations into genetic determinants of stature published so far vary markedly (Bayley, 1954; Tanner and Israelsohn,1963; Garn and Rohmann 1966; Welon and Bielicki, 1971; Mueller, 1976). This is probably due to high differentiation of the material used and to differing measurement techniques adopted. Accordingly, there is a need for longitudinal studies conducted by the same researchers. These would make it possible to observe parent-child similarities in the course of the growth of the offspring of a given couple. The longitudinal character of the present study made it possible to observe the correlation between parents and children from birth up to the age of 16.
