Abstract
Several species of land snails belonging to the genus Partula occur on the island of Moorea in French Polynesia. They were studied in great detail by Crampton (1932), who considered their polymorphic varieties of shell colour and pattern to represent ‘indifferent characters’ unaffected by natural selection. To account for the variations found in the genus, Crampton invoked the pressures of recurrent mutation and migration. More recently they have been ascribed to the consequences of random genetic drift (Huxley 1942, Carlquist 1965).
