Abstract

In this lecture a discussion is given of generalized image charge interactions for particles which are moving at some distance from a metal surface. The importance of this problem lies in the fact that many investigations of surface phenomena involve the scattering of charged particles by the surface (low energy electron diffraction, fast electron spectroscopy, etc.) or the ejection of charged particles from the surface (photoemission, field emission). These dynamical interactions are dependent on the nature of the elementary excitations at the surface.
