Abstract
The literature carries only restricted information on the crystallization kinetics of zincite under hydrothermal conditions; we find [1, 2] only the face growth rates for monohedra as functions of temperature difference AT in solutions of KOH and NaOH. Preferential growth along the polar L6 axis leads ultimately to loss of the positive monohedron face. Prolonged growth causes the crystal to be covered with the slowly growing faces only, and the overall growth rate becomes low, which is particularly noticeable when small-area seed plates are used. Introduction of lithium into the solution alters the growth rates of the (0001) and (1010) faces; this has been reported as advantageous also in the growth of perfect zincite crystals [2, 3].
