Growth Conditions and the Morphology of Vicinal Faces of the Principal Rhombohedra of Quartz Crystals

  • Chapter
РОСТ КРИСТАЛЛОВ/Rost Kristallov/Growth of Crystals

Abstract

A given face on different quartz crystals often will have differing vicinals; this is particularly characteristic of the faces of the r{1011} and z{011l} basic rhombohedra, in which the vicinals can be represented by two types of three-face pyramids [1, 2] and growth hummocks (Figs. 1 and 2). Vicinals indicate closely changes in growth condition [3], although it must be borne in mind that the details of their structure reflect the state of the mineral-forming region only during the last stages of growth; nevertheless, the vicinal morphology in relation to growth conditions can provide additional information in elucidating natural crystal origins.
