Abstract
The natural abundance of silicon and the commonness of Si minerals are reflected in the numerous studies in experimental mineralogy designed to establish the natural conditions of silicate formation and the physical chemistry of simple and complex silicate systems. A major result from these studies has been the production of new silicon compounds, with identification of their crystallization and stability ranges. A very similar analog of silicon is germanium, but this cannot compete with the latter as regards the number of natural minerals, mainly on account of its low natural abundance, but under laboratory conditions it should show at least as many germanates as there are silicates.
