Abstract
The cat and the rat are altricious animals. They are well-suited for studying the development of hearing because their cochleae are still immature at birth. However, other investigators have reported differences in the age of onset for cochlear microphonic (CM) potentials and compound action potentials (AP) in these two species. In the cat, CM appears two days before birth (Romand, 1971), whereas the rat’s onset of CM is reported to be 8–9 days after birth with the onset of AP occurring 11 days after birth (Crowley and Hepp-Raymond, 1966; Uziel et al., 1981).
