Quasielastic Neutron Scattering from α-AgI

Part of the book series: NATO Advanced Study Institutes Series ((NSSB,volume 33))

Abstract

In this contribution we will present new experimental quasielastic neutron scattering data on α-AgI along with an interpretation of these data in terms of a simple model+. As has already been discussed in the introductory part of this session, α-AgI may be visualized to a first approximation as a sea of mobile silver ions within a rigid b.c.c. iodide ion lattice. The question we asked ourselves is the following. How do the silver ions move on microscopic scales of a few Ångstroms and picoseconds ? In particular, how does this microscopic motion depend on temperature ?
