Abstract
A major contribution to the investigation of electrolyte metabolism in affective disorders was the successful use of lithium (Li) in the treatment of manic-depressed patients. It was found to be effective in the treatment of the manic phase (Gershon 1960) and in the prophylaxis of manic and depressive episodes (Bastrup 1967). Lithium also shows a mild anti-depressive action, but this is still a controversial issue (Mendels 1972).
