Abstract

Twin studies (Luxenburger, 1928; Rosanoff et al., 1934; Essen-Möller, 1941; Kallmann, 1946; Slater, 1953; Inoye, 1961; Tienari, 1963; Kringlen, 1968; Gottesman & Shields, 1972; Fischer 1973; Pollin et al., 1969) and fostering and adoption studies (Karlsson, 1966; Heston, 1966; Rosenthal et al., 1968; Kety et al., 1968), show that genetic factors play a major role in the etiology, but other, environmental, factors are important as well. That statement is generally accepted so I will summarize some of the questions which come into my mind regarding schizophrenia and genetics:

  1. 1

Is the syndrome we call schizophrenia a disease which can be identified in countries with different social and cultural background?
