Abstract

The structure of a diplotene bivalent with one chiasma, as seen in the microscope, can be interpreted according to either the chiasma-type theory or the two-plane theory (Fig. 18.1; Darlington, 1937; Jones, 1987). The latter assumes that the paired chromatids on the distal side of a chiasma belong to different chromosomes, one paternal and one maternal. According to the chiasma-type theory, two maternal chromatids and two paternal chromatids remain paired on both sides of the chiasma: in other words, a chiasma is the result of crossing-over. Observations of normal bivalents do not allow one to distinguish between these two possibilities.
