Abstract
Fusion of normal, untreated mammalian cells has been described only in the development of bone, muscle, and trophoblast tissues. Otherwise, at least one of the fusing cells has been malignant. Early studies on cell fusion have been reviewed, for example by Otto and Therman (1982). Cell fusion was originally detected in vitro, but has been found in an increasing number of malignant diseases in vivo (for instance, Kovacs, 1985; Sandberg, 1987). It is not clear whether fusion, malignant-malignant or malignant-host cell, plays any significant role in the creation of aneuploid-polyploid chromosome constitutions in cancer (Sreekantaiah et al., 1987). Spontaneous fusion of nonmalignant lymphocytes and fibroblasts has so far been observed only in Bloom syndrome (Otto and Therman, 1982).
