Abstract

Hemoglobin is a complex chromoprotein that is composed of four heme groups and four polypeptide globin chains. In adult hemoglobin, hemoglobin A, the globin consists of two alpha and two beta chains. The alpha chains comprise 141 and the beta chains 146 amino acids. The molecular weight of hemoglobin is 64,458. Under biological conditions the molecular weight is somewhat higher, 66,000 according to Drabkin.
