Abstract
The liver plays a principal role in the digestion, metabolism, and storage of nutrients. Liver disease is commonly associated with a deficiency of nutrients. Among the causes of malnutrition in liver disease are decreased intake, decreased absorption, abnormalities in metabolism, decreased storage, and increased requirements of nutrients. Alcoholism is a frequent etiologic factor in the development of both malnutrition and liver disease, but nutritional deficiencies are common also in liver diseases not associated with alcoholism.
