Abstract
Although the major objective of this chapter is to delineate, compare, contrast, and, to some extent, integrate, the extant major theoretical schools of marital and family therapy in the mid 1980s, it seems important to provide a brief historical backdrop against which one can view them and bring each into the spotlight for serious analysis. (Despite a conscious effort to be extremely objective and accurate, this retrospective portrait necessarily reflects the author-as-scholar’s own biases accrued through her experience and her vast reading about and contact with many of the leading personalities in fhe field. Given the space restrictions, the intent is to be comprehensive; yet there is full realization that this discussion is far from all-inclusive.)
