Abstract

Human T-cell Leukemia Virus type I (HTLV-I) is a human retrovirus that causes disease mainly in the Mediterranean and south tropical areas such as Southern Europe, Middle East, Japan, Philippines, South America, Caribbean and Central Africa1, 2. It is spread from mother to child perinatally or by breast feeding. Transfer from one individual to another can also occur by sexual contact and infected blood. Although it is asymptomatic in the vast majority of the population, a relatively small (< 4%) but still significant number of individuals develops after several years from the onset of the infection, a severe adult T cell leukemia (ATL)3 or the so-called tropical spastic paraparesis (TSP)4, also known as a HTLV-I associated myelopathy (HAM), a neurological disorder characterized by a slow and progressive demyelination of the peripheral nerves and causing paraparesis and spasticity of the lower extremities. Moreover, HTLV-I can also cause a severe granulocytosis and eosinophilia5 and in some cases an autoimmune chronic athritis6.
