Abstract
This chapter is devoted to concepts, measures and processes related to product reliability and quality that we shall need throughout the book. In Section 2.1, we outline the basic properties, and consider some special cases of a timevarying point process. This process is used to model the time points at which a unit under warranty or subject to preventive maintenance fails. It provides the basis for an integrating modeling framework for the entire monograph. Section 2.2 is devoted to some concepts and measures of product quality, including conformance quality; a discussion of the partial ordering relations that we use in the book to characterize quality (reliability) improvement; a mixture model that we use for the study of the impact of conformance quality; and some numerical examples.
