Abstract
Ecological indicators have long been used for practical purposes. Why is there now enough interest in ecological indicators to convene numerous group activities on this issue, including the Symposium to which this paper was a contribution? A major, though somewhat erratic, process of political reform is underway with respect to how humans relate to the natural environment and renewable resources. This “green” reform is entraining a need for types of ecological information particularly relevant to the emerging goals of this reform.
