Abstract
This issue consists of a collection of articles related to the software process and its automation. Although great expectations have been given to computer-aided software engineering (CASE) in the last few years, the potential has not yet been fully realized. This was due in part to the immaturity of the tools, but also in part to the lack of supplementary technologies to make CASE truly viable commercially. In fact, to take any substantial field of innovation to a commercial success, it usually requires the integration of several diverse component technologies. For example, from the Wright brothers’ success at Kitty Hawk in 1903, it took 30 years to bring about commercial air travel. The success of the DC-3 depended on an ensemble of five critical component technologies.
