Abstract
Macroevolutionary patterns within clades are important issues in evolutionary biology. Clade shape, an expression of the diversity of taxa through time, is affected by the history of discovery and the description of new taxa. Lazarus-taxa and the “Lazarus effect” are terms coined by Jablonski (1986) to describe clades which reappear in the record long after they were thought to have become extinct and are equivalent to the “living fossils” in modern biota. A complementary phenomenon is the addition of taxa at the beginning of the temporal range of a clade. A well-developed clade phylogeny can predict the minimal number of missing taxa in the early history of a clade and can contribute to our understanding of clade diversity through time.
