Activation-Dependent Regulation of β1 Integrin Expression and Function in Human Natural Killer Cells

  • Chapter
Cell Adhesion Molecules

Abstract

Lymphocytes express a wide variety of cell surface receptors which mediate their adhesion to other cells and to extracellular matrix (ECM) and are critical for reculation and homing and immunological recognition (Springer, 1990; Shimizu and Shaw, 1991). The majority of these adhesion molecules belongs to the three different supergene families of immunoglobulins, integrins and selectins, and interacts with an ECM ligand. Recently, an increasing number of lymphocyte ECM receptors has been identified in the integrin superfamily, mostly belonging to the β1 integrin family (Hemler, 1990) (Figure 1).
