Abstract
Pathological gambling is a disorder that affects up to 1.1 million individuals in America alone (Commission on Review of the National Policy Toward Gambling, 1976). Opportunities for recreational gambling continue to increase: almost every state uses legal lotteries to generate revenue, casino gambling and sports betting are becoming legal in more jurisdictions, a volatile stock market is providing opportunities for the more affluent, and illegal gambling is continuing to thrive. It is estimated that over 10 billion dollars are wagered annually in state lotteries and over 70 billion dollars in legal and illegal sports betting. Despite the increase in gambling and the recent notoriety associated with pathological gambling by public figures, research into etiological factors and effective treatment interventions is very limited.
