Abstract
In this chapter we describe our proposal for query processing in global information systems, which addresses the problems discussed in the introduction. The system architecture modules and the query processing approach are highly related because, on the one hand, the query processing algorithm needs some concrete modules that perform the different tasks and, on the other hand, the set (and functionality) of modules describes by itself the kind of query processing that the system performs. The goal of this chapter is to describe both the architecture and the query processing. We first introduce a motivating example that is used in the following chapters. This example illustrates the different problems that arise when querying global information systems and for which we provide a solution.
