Voices from the Center

  • Chapter
The Mental Health Consequences of Torture

Part of the book series: The Plenum Series on Stress and Coping ((SSSO))

Abstract

In the pages that follow, survivors share delicate pieces of their painful ordeal. For many, this was the first time they had spoken to another person of their agonizing experience of torture. This sharing did not come easily. Yet these men and women were willing to take a risk so that others might better understand the world of torture survivors.
