Abstract

This chapter deals with the experimental design and analysis of functional brain imaging studies. It considers the neurobiological motivations for different designs and describes some standard approaches, developed to analyse the ensuing data. Functional neuroimaging (positron emission tomography - PET and functional magnetic resonance imaging fMRI) are generally used to make inferences about functional anatomy on the basis of evoked patterns of cortical activity. Functional anatomy refers to the anatomical organisation of the brain, as it relates to function. It involves an understanding of what each part of the brain does, and how different brain systems interact to support various sensori-motor and cognitive functions. This chapter discusses how this understanding is attained from the perspective of design and analysis of neuroimaging data.
