Psychological Sense of Community in a Local Parish

Psychological Sense of Community

Abstract

The nature of communities, how they form, and how they function are questions that underpin much of the research in sense of community. In his description of communities, Heller (1989) proposed that they are formed to serve one of three functions — they were locational (based on place), relational (based on a shared interest, issues, etc.), or they form so that the members can exercise joint power. Church parishes, as embodiments of religious communities, incorporate elements of both the location and relational functions; with the adherence to a super-ordinate structure and goals, and a transcendent aim, represented by the broader church and its body of beliefs and liturgies.
