The Inflammation as the Connecting Link Between Systemic Diseases and Periodontal Diseases

Studies on Periodontal Disease

Abstract

Numerous epidemiological studies have found associations between periodontitis and systemic conditions, but there is a lack of consensus on the nature of the connecting link among them. This chapter shows the recent advances about systemic inflammatory markers in periodontitis patients, the effect of periodontal therapy over systemic inflammatory markers, and some putative pathogenic mechanisms that could be shared with other conditions. C-reactive protein has been the most studied marker, with increasing evidence of the effect of periodontal therapy on this one and other inflammatory markers, and the influence over the progression of the systemic condition. Cross-reactivity to Porphyromonas gingivalis heat shock proteins and citrullination of host proteins by this species are presented as mechanisms linking periodontal and systemic conditions, specially rheumatoid arthritis.
