Noninvasive Screening and Testing for PAD in CKD Patients

Abstract

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a cardiovascular disease risk equivalent and is a common problem in chronic kidney disease patients. In addition to the process of intimal atherosclerosis that is associated with traditional risk factors such as diabetes and tobacco abuse, PAD in CKD occurs due to medical calcification. PAD intervention should be performed in select symptomatic patients, as described by the guidelines, and CVD risk factor modification should occur in all CKD patients, regardless of the presence of PAD. The purpose of this chapter is to describe the screening and testing for PAD in CKD and ESRD patients.
