Abstract
Child development involves the maturation and integration of an array of physical and cognitive functions. Although typical development occurs in a predictable sequence, there is also significant variability in rates of typical development. Screening techniques, such as standardized rating scales and observational tools, allow professionals to efficiently and accurately identify children who may be at risk for developmental delays or a developmental disorder. This chapter describes the benefits and limitations of developmental screeners in general and reviews a number of the screeners available to early childhood professionals.
