Abstract

The ability to effectively communicate with the patient and their families during what is the most difficult time in their live is essential. The goals of care change from cure to palliate and provide comfort. Knowing the questions to ask and what should be asked provide everyone with a better opportunity to achieve a care plan that is attainable. Skills discussed includes providers listening as well as informing, putting aside one set of goals and focusing on another, and providing information and resources that can allow the family to make informed decision about the future.
