Abstract

The Lichtenstein “tension-free” hernia repair has been accepted as a standard repair for both unilateral and bilateral inguinal hernias. The concept of tension-free repair using mesh prostheses to repair the inguinal defect has significantly decreased the risk of hernia recurrence and has led to the development of several variations of both open and laparoscopic “tension-free” repairs. This repair has remained a recommended standard technique due to its reliability, simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and safety. Specific attention to groin neuroanatomy and proper nerve handling is important to reduce the incidence of chronic postoperative pain.
