Abstract
Chapter 2 illustrates the inevitably interdisciplinary nature of sexual medicine, owed to the fact that sexuality is an interpersonal event and thus related to the humanities and anthropological findings confirming that humans are relational beings provided with a “social brain”. Consequently, the partner also needs to be integrated into the assessment procedure as well as into the therapy itself in order to take into consideration the reality of the couple in their partnership. Sexual medicine is closely related to different medical disciplines, i.e. their clinical implications, but mediating the necessary interdisciplinary knowledge to understand disorder conditions not only on an individual, but on an interpersonal basis, is the appropriate way of training these special skills in medical school as well as in postgraduate training programmes in sexual medicine.
