Neuropsychological Assessment with Hispanic Clients

Guide to Psychological Assessment with Hispanics

Abstract

Neuropsychology is a relatively new field, though it has seen exponential growth since its emergence in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Today, we have APA-accredited programs with a specific emphasis in this field and professional organizations (NAN, INS, APA Division 40) dedicated to the practice of neuropsychology, neuroscience, and neuropsychiatry. In conjunction with our understanding of the biological origins for behavior, the field has developed a myriad of objective measures to assess functioning. At the same time, we have had a substantial growth in our Hispanic population in the USA with the 2010 Census indicating that nearly two-thirds of non-English speakers primarily spoke Spanish. Thus, it stands to reason that an expansion of normative data should include norms for Hispanic, Spanish-speaking individuals. While several studies have tried to exhaustively quantify measures of ethnicity and race related to the Hispanic population, they have come forward with varied results and few practical solutions beyond conducting an exhaustive study of the range of ethnic and cultural variables available. This chapter is focused on recent research that emphasizes the study of the most consistent and measurable variables pertinent to evaluating Hispanic clients, with the goal of aiding the practitioner looking to expand their practice of neuropsychological assessment to Hispanic populations, as well as a reference to relevant normative and psychometric data for common neuropsychological assessment instruments.
