Abstract

“Crazy tree huggers.” That’s the kind of slur we evangelicals have thrown at environmentalists. Yet the founder of Christianity himself explicitly forbids contemptuous name-calling.

Notes

  1. 1.

“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you that …. whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire” (Matthew 5: 21–22, English Standard Version).

  2. 2.

Jesus’ longest parable is the story of a Father with two sons; the younger brother returns to the Father’s house after spending his inheritance in a far-off country. Scandalized by the Father’s welcome of his younger brother, the older brother stays away from the party thrown for his brother by the Father. The story ends with the Father imploring the older brother to come back into the house to join his younger brother and the other party-goers (see Luke 15: 11–32).
