Abstract

The observation in the 1950s and 1960s of a significantly lower incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the olive-growing, Mediterranean regions of Europe, compared with Northern Europe and the United States, was the initial reason the Mediterranean diet was studied. Since that time, a MedDiet has repeatedly demonstrated its ability to reduce the risk for CVD—the number one cause of mortality and years of life lost worldwide.
