Abstract
Depression is the most frequent mental disorder. Its main symptoms are depressive mood, lack of interest, and fatigue. The mental illness depression must be differentiated from sadness or grief. Basic interventions include informing, accompanying, and activating. Patients with moderate to severe forms of depression need psychotherapy and antidepressant drugs. Patients with risk of suicide must be recognized. Interventions for suicide preventions are described.
