Abstract

The orbit protects and supports the eye and its adnexal structures including the optic nerve, vasculature, extraocular muscles, and lacrimal gland. Orbital disease can be benign or malignant and often fits into the categories of inflammatory, vascular, structural, or neoplastic disease. The evaluation of all patients with possible orbital pathology should be complete and systematic because even benign disease can have significant ophthalmic morbidity. The goal of the orbital evaluation is to identify the nature of the orbital disease and its location by combining elements of the patient history, examination findings, laboratory test, and imaging techniques. This knowledge guides medical and surgical treatment.
