Abstract

Christian Mayer (1719–1783) was a Czech teacher and astronomer. There is not much known about Mayer’s early life. He was 20 when he decided to become a Jesuit and entered the Society of Jesus in Mannheim. After receiving his education he began teaching the humanities. His was appointed as a professor of Mathematics and Physics at Heidelberg. With his interest in Astronomy he was appointed the Court Astronomer at Mannheim. In 1771 he began the construction of the Mannheim Observatory that would be actively used for over 100 years.
