Abstract

Mesenchymal tumors of the liver are rare and account for lesser than 5% of all primary hepatic neoplasms. They are usually large, radiographically apparent tumors that are evaluated in the preoperative setting, although the diagnosis may be first suggested during surgical exploration in some cases. Most pediatric liver tumors contain mesenchymal elements with, or without, an epithelial component. These lesions are also uncommon and may not be detected before they achieve a large size. Surgical resection is the treatment of choice for mesenchymal tumors of adults and children. Intraoperative consultation is generally obtained for two purposes: (1) assessing the adequacy of resection and (2) providing information regarding tumor classification.
