Abstract

The diagnostic category, mental retardation, encompasses an extremely heterogeneous population. Well over two hundred causes of mental retardation have been identified. Genetics, inborn errors of metabolism, infection, trauma, anoxia, and prematurity are some of the more common etiological factors. Because mental retardation is a developmental disorder, the effects of the various etiological factors may not be detected until long after their initial impact on the developing organism. Indeed, more often than not there is no specific etiological event that is identifiable, nor can a particular event be inferred in most cases to have had a direct causal influence.
