Abstract
In a system to support interactive program development, testing, and debugging, it is desirable to provide the ability to initiate execution at any time and have the program begin executing immediately, with no delay for compilation. Such a system should maintain the program in executable form at all times and update the program’s object code in accordance with changes to the program’s source code. The task of an incremental compiler in such a system would be to update the target code after a modification to the program, re-using as much old code as possible.
