Abstract

Computer-based management information systems are bringing about fundamental changes in many industries. Some well-known examples include American Airline’s SABRE reservation system,1 Otis Elevator’s computer diagnostic repair service,2 and Frito Lay’s electronic inventory retrieval system.3 These companies have used information in new ways and have gained a major competitive advantage in the market place. Indeed, the innovative use of information is now a critical success factor in business, and many companies have appointed Chief Information Officers to develop and implement information strategies.
