Hemostatic Mechanisms and Metastasis

Part of the book series: Developments in Oncology ((DION,volume 22))

Abstract

Although the first description of vascular thrombosis in cancer patients is more than one century old (1), several unresolved questions still remain on the involvement of the hemostatic system in malignancy. First, clinical studies have repeatedly demonstrated that malignant disease is associated with a high incidence of hemostatic disorders, ranging from isolated abnormalities of laboratory tests to vascular thrombosis, hemorrhage or overt disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). On the other hand, using different techniques, several investigators have shown the presence of fibrin deposits in and around tumors as a sign of the activation of clotting in malignancy (2–4).
